Introducing this week’s ‘Selling for Researchers’ workshop, Professor Ann Dowling explained the origin of the title of the theme ‘Inspiring Research through Industrial Collaboration‘.
The aspiration of many in the Engineering Department is to conduct research on topics that matter to society, choosing problems that are big enough to matter, where there are system-wide issues and many stakeholders. These problems will be brought to researchers in the Department by collaborating industrial organisations that see opportunities or difficulties in the ways that products and services are created, the sustainability implications of new developments and the potential social impacts of change. And researchers in the Engineering Department can then be inspired by the problems posed to derive bigger and more profound questions, research those questions and so deliver inspiring research.
Hence the theme.
